I would like us to consider two different, though significant, aspects of Knowles’ work.
The first has to do with some of the assumptions regarding andragogy. The point here is that when people discuss education there is often the implication that there should be a social or cultural component that will elicit some sort of societal change. Those theorists who work from a critical perspective would expect that there should be an agenda for change. If you do become an adult educator this is something that you probably want to become clear on — that is to say that you will want to know whether your intention is to teach adults as a means of social change or are your interactions individual transactional.
As you read Chapter Seven, you will see Knowles perspective and you will also read about some of the critiques regarding his perspective. Hopefully, by the end of the chapter, you will have a sense of where your thinking lies.
You will also get a chance to consider the Andragogy in Practice model. As you read about the model in this chapter, try to think of how this model might apply to your own learning project. Consider how the Andragogy in Practice model might apply to your own learning project if you were planning on designing tutorials or classes or any sort of learning environment to help others learn what you are learning with your own project.
I think you will find the two case studies shared in the chapter to be quite helpful in connecting the Andragogy in Practice model to actual learning events. A worksheet is provided that helps, I think, break this down into manageable units.
This chapter will expand on the Andragogical Process Model that you read about in Week Four.
Here is the Chapter
The second aspect for consideration is how andragogy can be an important way of thinking about training and educating in Human Resources.
Let me share with you a short video explaining Human Resource Development.
What is Human Resource Development?
Human Resource Development – Objectives and Functions of HRD (Management video 21)
4 Essential Human Resource Development HRD Functions
This next video makes a nice distinction between training and development.
For those of you considering doing any sort of institutional training or educating of adults, I think you will find this chapter to be very interesting. Not only will it help you frame the way you think and communicate about your teaching models, but it will also provide you with a way of framing the assessments you will likely have to do to justify and evaluate your training/educating interactions.
This chapter will give you a nice background and a bit of history regarding Human Resource Development. If this is an area you intend on pursuing professionally, there are, of course, many books and articles that you could consult to deepen and broaden your understanding.
Here is Chapter 8
I hope that gives you a good feel for applying the adragogical process model and how Human Resources might take advantage of such a model.
I don’t ask any specific questions today. I am hoping you will have a bit more time to work on your own Projects.
Have a great week!
