In our second week we will view three documentaries. We not only get a sense of the neurological underpinnings of learning and schooling, but we also get a chance to witness students engaged in action research as it applies to environmental challenges as well as educational reform issues.

School of the Future

Once the envy of the world, American schools are now in trouble. Can the science of learning— including new insights from neuroscientists, psychologists, and educators—reveal how kids’ brains work and tell us which techniques are most likely to engage and inspire growing minds? Teachers, students, parents, and scientists take center stage as NOVA explores a new vision for the School of the Future. (113 minutes)




Hope Builders

The future of the world is perhaps being played out in an elementary school in Quebec. A teacher implements a new teaching method known as action research, which is aimed at preparing children to take up environmental challenges. During a very special school year, the students of Dominique Leduc’s sixth-grade class are learning to identify, rigorously analyze, and resolve problems in their world. They also learn about the uncertainty faced by those who want to change things. A unique and invaluable witness to this experimental educational project, this documentary demonstrates how this teaching method is important in developing critical intelligence in students, but it also underlines the crucial role of the teacher. Director emeritus Fernand Dansereau reminds us therefore that we must still look to the human instinct to find reasons to hope. (90 minutes)


Schools That Change Communities

A few public schools across the country are trying a different approach to engaging their students in the learning process: using the surrounding communities and neighborhoods as classrooms. This creates not only a different type of learning environment, but also a different kind of student. This program showcases a diverse range of K-12 public schools across five states that have the potential to refocus the national debate around the direction that educational reform should take.
